![]() ![]() Major Penderton (Marlon Brando) is married to Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor) who has grown up on army bases and is the darling of the military hierarchy.Īlmost immediately one is plunged into the fact that Leonora Penderton is unhappy in her marriage and therefore is entitled to carry on an affair with Major Morris Langdon (Brian Keith). It seems that all stories set in the South must contain adultery, voyeurism, and sexual orientation that are out of bounds with society. Elizabeth Taylor doesn’t fare any better given the role of a beautiful woman who is so ditzy that you wonder why she is the star of the Army base in Georgia where her husband is Major Penderton. ![]() Once in awhile Marlon Brando comes to life but for such short periods one is left with the feeling that his role as Major Penderton was not worth learning his lines for. Given two stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando, a story by Carson McCullers and a director like John Huston, you have to ask yourself how could such a combination be a total wash-out? The staging is slow moving leaving one to wonder why John Huston was touted as such a great director. Now 46 years later it seems ponderous and you wonder what all the fuss was about. When Reflections In A Golden Eye was made in 1967 it covered some subjects that were considered risqué for the movie going public. ![]()
