"There is nothing so small that it does not save its life if it has the courage to defend itself against those who would lay hand on it." - Brasidas of Sparta, quoted by Plutarch. And if people in SoCal are really like the characters in this book, then I’m staying the hell away. But this is by no means a “feel good” book. The writing-despite its bluntness and graphic descriptions-was good and often very funny. (By the way, Michael Kramer has the perfect voice for the material … with a kind of WTF/seen it all, done it all attitude.) The basic story deals with a love triangle between two pot dealers and their girl and what happens when they run awry of a Mexican drug cartel and the girl gets kidnapped. I listened to it on audio when I was walking my dogs and there were times when I felt myself blushing from what I was listening to … ON MY HEADPHONES! I kept thinking “If people only knew what I was listening to now, they’d be shocked.” This is some hard-core, graphic writing … and hearing it read out loud makes it seem even more so. Not For Everyone But Really Good!įirst things first, this is not a book for the faint-hearted or the easily offended.

There, she meets with the shady (but certainly funny) Val (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who tells her that she has a new target, and it's the person responsible for Natasha's death. While the main Black Widow storyline takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the movie's credits scene jumps to the aftermath of Endgame, with Yelena visiting Natasha's grave. But Black Widow finally gives Natasha the solo hero journey that she's long deserved, while setting up her "sister," Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) up for her own future across numerous MCU projects. It was clear after Avengers: Endgame that Natasha (and Johansson) had limited time remaining in their MCU journeys after the character, you know, died. The following story contains spoilers for the MCU and Black Widow.īlack Widow is now finally out in theaters and on Disney+ (for those who feel like spending an additional $29.99), and that likely closes the book on Natasha Romanoff, the character played now in eight Marvel Cinematic Universe movies across an 11-year span by Scarlett Johansson. So where did the title spring from? ‘Turtles all the way down’ is an old phrase that was used as a rebuttal for the existence of God. The scenes in which Aza descends into the madness of her disorder, a turbulent chaos, this ever-tightening spiral in which she is trapped, are incredibly difficult to read, yet something you can’t tear your eyes away from. He is able to sensitively unveil the stark reality of these often stereotyped illnesses, whilst also constructing a compelling story. This novel, from the author of The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, follows Aza Holmes, a 16-year old girl who attempts to solve the mystery of a missing local billionaire, all whilst struggling with severe Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Green himself struggles with mental illness, something which you can read through the heartbreakingly accurate portrayal of the mental illness from which Aza suffers. There are some books that I can read and re-read for years John Green’s Turtles all the Way Down is one of them. “When the few survivors were liberated, one from a city and two from a family…without the breath of life or any desire to live, there was no natural means visible on their horizon by which these people could recover,” Rav Yehoshua Moshe Aronson, one of the few Polish rabbonim to survive the Holocaust, wrote in his sefer “Alei Merorot. Haunted by their memories, sick and prematurely aged, trapped in the camps even after liberation, many survivors hovered on the edge of an emotional and spiritual abyss, questioning whether there was anything worth living for. Nazi brutality and dehumanization had wiped away many facets of their identity. They seemed to belong nowhere, perhaps not even fully to themselves. But Jewish survivors did not belong to that world. Footage taken in many camps at the hour of liberation captures the joyful sobbing of ravaged inmates, as the yearned for moment of freedom finally arrived.īut for many survivors, the initial burst of jubilation fizzled out as the magnitude of the devastation sank in, and traumatized victims realized they had no homes or community to return to, no family to embrace them.Īcross the world, wild celebrations filled the streets. “ –Rav Yehoshua Moshe Aronson, Alei Merorotįor most Holocaust survivors, liberation and the opening of the camps triggered an outpouring of exultation. “From Heaven came the answer: These bones shall live! We saw with certainty Hashem’s kindness dripping the dew of techiyas hameisim upon us. Can these dry bones come back to life?” we wondered. "The year 1907 appears on the front of the title page of the first three printings, which are believed to be identical" (Linder, 427). "Gratifyingly full of detail and naughty doings" (Taylor et al., 133). London and New York: Frederick Warne, 1907. “GRATIFYINGLY FULL OF DETAIL AND NAUGHTY DOINGS” Said narrative pivots on the title character, an alluring young woman named Lorelle, and the suburban neighborhood she moves into. The writing has a somewhat hasty quality that tends to characterize Garton’s work (the man cranks out an average of 2-3 books a year), but it’s nearly impossible not to get drawn into the perverse narrative. It’s a triple X-rated, pulpy and heartfelt treat for readers with strong constitutions. In 2004 Cemetery Dance published a slightly more affordable $40.00 reprint, but that edition is now out of print and an expensive collector’s item in its own right-a shame, as this is one of Garton’s better novels.Ĭertainly THE NEW NEIGHBOR showcases nearly all its author’s strengths…and, yes, a few of his weaknesses. THE NEW NEIGHBOR is no different, having been initially printed back in 1990 in an extremely limited Charnel House edition, illustrated by J.K. Unfortunately his best work is difficult to obtain, as it’s published mostly via expensive small press limited editions. The prolific Ray Garton is an author who can usually always be relied upon to deliver unpretentious chills, a driving narrative and lots of unflinching grue. It was these concerns that prompted indie icon Michelle Tea–whose memoir The Chelsea Whistle details her own working-class roots in gritty Chelsea, Massachusetts–to collect these fierce, honest, tender essays written by women who can’t go home to the suburbs when their assignment is over. While many recent books have thoughtfully examined the plight of the working poor in America, none of the authors of these books is able to claim a working-class background, and there are associated methodological and ethical concerns raised when most of the explicatory writing on how poverty affects women and girls is done by educated, upper-class journalists.
